1852 - ‘our English Lake district’
William Armistead (a.k.a. Lorenzo Tuvar) hoped to enhance the pleasure of the tourist through stories he collected about the Lake District. Here you can learn the story of ‘Emma; Or, the Murdered Maid’, ‘The Unfortunate Tourist of Helvellyn’, and ‘The Spectre Army of Soutra Fell’. Armistead makes clear how the Lake District scenery inspires the imagination:
‘No part of the world possesses so many charms for the contemplative mind as the admirable scenery of our English Lake district’.
